Earlier this month, RWI surgeons @nvlmedicalaesthetics and @alexeshazenmd traveled to Lahore, Pakistan, on a volunteer trip in collaboration with @evercarepk and @depilex_smileagain_foundation .
This trip was a great success: In just one week, the team of surgeons saw 16 patients, conducted 40 surgeries, and made amazing new friends and colleagues.

Thank you to the Evercare group and SmileAgain foundation for their instrumental help and care attending to burn victims in Lahore in need of surgical treatment.

TWENTY-FIVE women and girls who suffered major burns and other deformities as a result of gender-based violence received plastic reconstructive surgeries in Dar es Salaam. Surgeries were conducted on women and girls in a project run by the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam (AKH, D), in partnership with Reconstructing Women International (RWI) and Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) back in November.

This partnership programme has impacted 239 beneficiaries over the last 8 years and marks the importance of public private partnerships in supporting those in need.”

The Head of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery at Muhimbili National Hospital Dr Edwin Mrema said; “the most satisfying moment of our career is when we help bring back the lost smiles and confidence of women and children.”

Dr Andrea Pusic, Plastic Surgeon, the team leader of RWI said the collaboration is not only help bringing back the smile for those injured women and girls but also building capacity for local surgeons.

“This is the 8th year of our very successful partnership with AKH, D and Muhimbili National Hospital. This collaboration has resulted in a very significant increase in local plastic surgery expertise and capacity,” Dr Pusic said.

Survivors of Breast Cancer have reason to smile as an International Workshop for Reconstructive Breast Surgery is underway this week at Kenyatta University Teaching Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.

The aim of the program is to provide a comprehensive educational opportunity for medical professionals and enhance the hospital’s commitment to offering the comprehensive breast cancer care.

A significant gender gap has persisted throughout the years at all levels of science all over the world. Even though women have made tremendous progress towards increasing their participation they are still under-represented in the field of medicine.

Reconstructing Women International is working to close the gap by providing surgical education & mentorship to women in regions of the world underserved. The mentor/mentee relationship has the power to greatly improve surgical training in countries with limited access to medical care.

A bright (FEMALE ) future for Reconstructive Surgery! 🤍

We had a very busy and successful week! This trip served as a wonderful reminder of why we do what we do.

We operated on 25 patients many of whom had very severe injuries compromising physical function and appearance (including two very TRAGIC situations of domestic violence and child abuse).

We also did a tremendous amount of TEACHING. We had 9 local surgical residents with us, 4 in plastics from the Muhimbili public hospital) and 5 general surgery residents. A wonderful female pediatric surgeon, Mona from Zanzibar and a delightful woman orthopedic surgeon named Helen also joined us to learn plastic surgery techniques that would improve their patient care. Our nurse educator Michele also taught the nursing team. On our last day, we had a city-wide symposium in which the residents presented cases and it went very well.

We continue to build deep abiding friendships and one program like this will benefit thousands of future patients.
These women surgeons and the Doctor Residents are incredibly talented and their dedication will inspire future generations of female doctors and the patients they serve.
It was enormously satisfying and a true JOY for us to perform these surgeries along side the team in Dar es Salaam and knowing that we helped in a way to build confidence and skillsets is beyond rewarding. It’s incredible to see what we can learn from each other 🤍

RWI: REACHING CHILDREN LIVING IN THE TOUGHEST OF CIRCUMSTANCES

FAUDHIA, an adorable one year old who was severely burned in a scald accident was one of our first patients this week here in Dar es Salaam.

Faudhia’s debilitating burns went untreated and left her unable to extend her elbow or shoulder.

A pediatrician surgeon from Zanzibar (Mwona) joined us on this case and we were able to teach the reconstructive surgical techniques that will allow her to go home to Zanzibar and help others in need.

The Great News…

Faudhia’s surgery was a success and in a few days she will have the full use of her arm and restored movement in her shoulder.

WE ARE THRILLED TO REPORT THAT OUR RWI TEAM IS RETURNING THIS FRIDAY TO DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA!

In collaboration with the Aga Khan and Muhimbili hospitals, our team of six female plastic surgeons from Canada, the US, and Switzerland
will be teaching a range of surgical techniques to local surgeons and residents.
We will cover topics including cancer reconstruction, craniofacial surgery, and trauma care through case-based presentations and discussions as well as hands-on teaching in the OR.
We will also lead a city-wide plastic surgery symposium with physicians joining us from the broader medical community of Dar es Salaam.

We are so thankful for this opportunity to teach and for the support of our committed donors.

Our RWI teams are generally all female because in the areas of the world
where we work, female patients are more likely to seek care when they
and their families know that they will only be seen by other women.
An important additional benefit of this is the strong sense of kinship and
solidarity that develops on each trip. As women, surgeons and patients alike,
we recognize each other and the roles in which we live – as mothers, daughters, sisters, friends.
Being a woman surgeon does provide a different perspective. Speaking beyond even the context of these surgical programs, the fact that more young women are choosing surgical careers is a good thing. Surgery has traditionally been a ‘male world’, with all that that entails. Women are now changing the culture of surgery; we are softening it at its edges in a very positive way. We can be just as technically good, just as disciplined, hardworking and committed, but we see things through a slightly different lens. Our patients also see us differently; to them, we are less the ‘unapproachable surgeon’ and more ‘the lady doctor.’ We are thus sometimes better able to hear, understand and react to our patients’ concerns. As the number of female plastic surgeons increases internationally, we hope that our ranks of RECONSTRUCTING WOMEN INTERNATIONAL surgeons will continue to grow.

From May 19 th through to May 26, 2022 a team from Reconstructing Women International participated in a surgical mission to the Aga Khan Hospital in Mombasa . The team members included : Dr N Van Laeken from Vancouver , Canada ,
Dr Michele Coriddi from New York , Emily Clark PA from New York and Jennifer Oliver PA, from Spokane Washington .
The team had tremendous support from the entire hospital .
Dr Abdi Mohammed , the Head of Surgery at AKH , participated in the pre screening and surgical care of these patients as well as the RWI team . Without his support we could not have been as productive and efficient as we were while on site .
We operated on 22 patients with severe burn contractures . The majority were women and small children .
Two Plastic Surgery Residents from Nairobi also attended the cases. They were sponsored by RWI .

An important part of future missions will be the knowledge sharing that we experienced with our colleagues from Kenya on this trip . Thank you to all who supported us.

AN RWI TEAM IS BACK IN MOMBASA — Most patients treated by rwi surgeons have suffered burns, from either accidents or assault. Women who survive such injuries may be left horribly disfigured by contracted scars; they may be unable to use their hands, extend their arms or even raise their head from their chest. Some can barely walk, feed themselves or perform basic hygiene without assistance.

The goal of RWI is to help such women regain their lives and place in society.

A team of RWI Doctors, led by Dr Marina Barandun of Switzerland made the first humanitarian trip back to Bangledesh in nearly two years after the pandemic had put all plans on hold. They screened 42 patients and performed surgery on 20- many of them children - aboard the Friendship Hospital Boat on the Brahmaputra River (in the area of Gaibanda 300 kils north of Dhaka). Due to COVID restrictions the trip was shortened and they worked each day past midnight to provide the much needed surgical care.

…I think it was our most successful visits to date. The focus on teaching and mentorship was an important positive shift.
