RECONSTRUCTING WOMEN INTL. — DECEMBER 2024

This year, our surgical team was composed of two Swiss, two Canadian, and two U.S. surgeons. Joining us were a Canadian anaesthesiologist and an OR nurse educator.

Together, we performed 28 surgeries, including procedures on nine children. The majority of cases involved burn injuries and complex hand deformities, which were skillfully managed by our Swiss hand surgeon, Martina. Notably, we also performed a bilateral breast reconstruction for a young woman after a mastectomy and provided reconstructive surgery for a woman who had experienced female genital mutilation in childhood.

Teaching remained a central focus of our mission. We worked alongside 10 surgical residents from the Aga Khan Hospital and Muhimbili Public Hospital, providing hands-on and intraoperative training. Two female Tanzanian surgeons—a pediatric surgeon from Zanzibar and an orthopedic surgeon from Dar es Salaam—also joined us to enhance their reconstructive surgery skills. Additionally, we conducted a well-received microsurgery simulation session, offering valuable practice in this specialized technique.

To conclude the week, we participated in a city-wide symposium on cancer surgery and

complex reconstruction, drawing over 50 attendees for an engaging day of shared learning and professional development.

As we reflect on this incredible journey, we invite you to make a donation in honor of someone you love, helping us continue our mission of healing and education!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT ♡
